Only the Brave DVD Review

Only the Brave DVD Review

From Director Joseph Kosinski, Only the Brave tells the heroic and tragic tale of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot men who died fighting the Yarnell, Arizona fire in 2013.

Josh Brolin stars as crew superintendent Eric Marsh, a former drug addict who turned his life around by dedicating himself to saving people, property and forests. Miles Teller plays Brendan McDonough, the only member of the crew to survive one of the deadliest forest fires in U.S. history, and whose book contributed to the film. Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Connelly co-star, along with a wonderful supporting cast of hotshot firefighters.

Quick and Dirty Movie Review

Though tragic, this movie offers people insight into the real dangers of forest-based firefighting. It also includes some history, as the Granite Mountain crew was the first and still only municipal firefighting crew to receive certified hotshot status in the United States.

There are no concerns about spoilers in setting the stage for what viewers can expect in this film. The plot centers on a recent tragedy that received national media attention. However, the talented actors and well-developed story helps viewers connect with the characters, learn about the dangers these firefighters face, and the sacrifices they make (including personal and family disruption) for the public good.

Who Should Watch

This film naturally has a lot of testosterone injected into it, but it is a solid movie choice for couples or the whole family. Younger kids may not be able to handle the sensitive nature of the story and some of the content elements, but teens would likely enjoy it.
