Hidden Figures DVD Review

From Director Theodore Melfi, and starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons Hidden Figures tells the amazing true story of three brilliant and determined black women who played major roles in the evolution of the NASA space program during the Civil Rights era of the 1960s.

Originally sourced from the separate “colored work group,” Katherine G. Johnson (Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Monáe) became invaluable assets in different capacities for their contributions to American efforts to get man into space. Hidden Figures depicts the personal challenges they faced over the course of their respective journeys.

Quick and Dirty Movie Review

Despite its historically sad premise, Hidden Figures, is an important dramatic telling of the efforts of three strong women who used their brains and their grit to prove their worth in a white, male-dominated workplace.

Though the personal and work experiences of each woman are brilliantly illustrated in the film, special emphasis is given to the story Katherine G. Johnson, played by Henson. Johnson was an elite “computer” called to assist at the highest levels of space shuttle testing, under the direction of Al Harrison (Kevin Costner). The movie, adapted from the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, indicates that Johnston’s work helped instill confidence in John Glenn about the safety of his mission into space.

Because of the brilliant acting of Henson, Spencer and Monáe, along with supporting players Costner, Jim Parsons and Kirsten Dunst, Hidden Figures is a stellar biographical drama. The filmmakers do a nice job leveraging the talented actors, effective music and story direction to maintain upbeat energy even with the obstacles the women must overcome.

Who Should Watch

Hidden Figures is an important film that anyone that mainstream audiences can appreciate based on its historical significance and compelling story. The PG-rating makes it inviting for children, allowing families to enjoy the movie together.
